The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line has completed one year of passenger operations, transporting nearly two million commuters since its launch on September 4, 2023.
Celebrating the milestone on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the Lagos State Government hailed the project as a major achievement in the city’s transportation system, enhancing mobility for residents across Lagos.
Commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023, the Blue Line underwent rigorous testing before being officially flagged off by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
As the first electric-powered rail system in West Africa, it connects Marina to Mile 2, offering a faster, more efficient commuting option for a diverse range of passengers, including professionals, students, and tourists.
While reflecting on the success of the Blue Line, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo expressed pride in the system’s impressive safety record and its role in driving economic growth.
She said, “We have been able to activate the vision of Mr. Governor for intermodal integrated transport. On this momentous occasion, we reflect on the significant impact this transformative project has had on Lagos and its residents.”
The Blue Line, which recently increased its daily trips from 54 to 72 in August 2024, has reduced travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from 30 minutes to 18 minutes. This efficiency has made the rail system integral to Lagos’ broader transportation network.
Looking ahead, LAMATA remains committed to further expanding the city’s rail infrastructure to meet the growing needs of commuters.
“We are grateful for the continued support of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, our partners, and the people of Lagos,” Engr. Akinajo added.
As Lagosians continue to embrace the Blue Line, its impact on reducing road congestion and improving mobility highlights the success of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a more integrated, sustainable transport system.
