A Nigerian student has accused police officers in Lagos of extortion after claiming they forced him to make a bank transfer of N20,000 during a stop-and-search along Ketu Bridge.

The student, who booked a ride through the e-hailing app inDrive from Murtala Muhammed Airport, said the incident occurred at about 11.30am while travelling to Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

He posted on X that officers asked him where he was coming from and where he was going, and when he said his destination they demanded proof.

He wrote, “While I was showing my student portal, one of the officers went behind to try to open my bag; thank God it was locked.” He alleged that another officer refused to return his phone and told him to enter their vehicle. “They drove me to a POS, forced me to transfer money, and said if I didn’t, they’d ‘take me somewhere else’.”

The student further claimed that the inDrive driver threatened to abandon him during the ordeal.

He said, “I’m tired of this country. I hate how the @PoliceNG keeps extorting and harassing innocent citizens every single day.”

He also questioned why the police patrol van had no visible number plate or identity markings.

The incident has triggered viral commentary on social media in Nigeria, with calls for urgent investigation into police conduct at checkpoints.

The alleged stop-and-extort model aligns with prior reports of similar behaviour at the same Ketu Bridge location.
