Lagos Police to Impound Vehicles With Covered, No Number Plates From Monday

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide enforcement operation against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or missing registration number plates as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security across the state.

The exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, is in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at improving public safety and denying criminal elements the opportunity to conceal their identities while carrying out unlawful activities.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the operation will be led by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai.
The Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to enforce the directive within their respective jurisdictions and ensure full compliance.

The Command warned that any vehicle found violating the directive would be impounded and subjected to thorough investigation in line with extant laws and established procedures.

The police, however, assured residents that the exercise was not designed to harass or inconvenience law-abiding motorists but rather to enhance the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects and strengthen the overall security architecture of Lagos State.

Motorists, transport operators and fleet owners were advised to ensure that their vehicles carry valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep all relevant vehicle documents updated and readily available for inspection whenever required.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Command appealed to residents to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious movements, persons or vehicles through its emergency lines.

“The success of this initiative, like all policing efforts, depends largely on the cooperation and support of members of the public,” the statement added.

The Lagos State Police Command also reiterated that security remains a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and the public.
