The police in Lagos have arrested a 21-year-old suspected armed robber found with a human hand, firearms, axes, stolen ATM cards and a Point of Sale (POS) terminal during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The suspect, identified as Samson Onilewaji, was nabbed after police intercepted an unmarked commercial shuttle bus carrying six occupants during a routine security patrol.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, a search of the vehicle and its occupants led to the recovery of a suspected human right hand, two locally made pistols, one live cartridge, two axes, one POS terminal machine and five ATM cards from the suspect.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Onilewaji confessed to recently robbing three individuals of their valuables, including the recovered POS terminal and ATM cards.
The Command said efforts were underway to trace and contact the victims so that their recovered property could be returned.
Investigators are also probing the origin of the suspected human body part, the identity of its owner and the circumstances surrounding its possession.
Police authorities added that detectives were working to determine whether the recovered human hand was linked to any violent crime or ritual-related activity, while efforts had been intensified to identify and arrest other members of the suspect’s criminal network.
The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to sustain the fight against violent crimes across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to the police to support ongoing efforts to prevent crime and enhance public safety.
The latest arrest underscores the Command’s intensified stop-and-search operations aimed at disrupting criminal activities and improving security across Lagos.
