The Lagos State Police Command has arrested five suspected telecommunications infrastructure vandals and recovered a truckload of iron rods allegedly stolen from a mast construction site in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.
The arrest marks another breakthrough in the Command’s intensified crackdown on vandals targeting critical public and private infrastructure across Lagos.
Police identified the suspects as Mohammed Shaibu, 26; Musa Zakari, 29; Abdullahi Bala, 22; Salisu Musa, 18; and Yahuza Bala, 20.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the suspects were allegedly caught stealing iron poles meant for the construction of telecommunications masts.
They were subsequently arrested while conveying the suspected stolen materials in a truck.
The suspects are currently in police custody, while investigation has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba.
Police said detectives are working to track down other suspects believed to be connected with the operation and establish the full extent of the alleged vandalism network.
The Command also credited the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army for what it described as “robust synergy and cooperation,” saying the military’s collaboration contributed significantly to the success of the operation and arrest of the suspects.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to protect critical infrastructure and ensure that those behind acts of vandalism are brought to justice.
Fatai urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and promptly alert security agencies to suspicious activities, particularly around telecommunications and other critical infrastructure installations.
The latest arrests come amid heightened security operations against infrastructure vandals in Lagos, with security agencies stepping up surveillance and intelligence-led enforcement to prevent theft and destruction of facilities vital to economic and public services.
The police urged members of the public with useful information to contact the Lagos State Police Command through its emergency lines.
