A medical doctor serving in the Nigeria Police Force has received an unusually rapid elevation in rank after being promoted directly from Inspector to Superintendent of Police, effectively bypassing the intermediate ranks of Assistant Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.
The officer, SP (Dr) Opeyemi Ojo, was formally decorated with his new rank on Monday at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja by the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai.
The promotion followed a recommendation by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and approval by the Police Service Commission, according to a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Command.
The development stands out because it involves a jump across three levels within the police hierarchy — from the Inspectorate cadre to Superintendent of Police — a progression that is far from routine in the Nigeria Police Force and reflects the officer’s conversion from the Inspectorate cadre into the senior officer cadre on account of his professional medical qualifications.
Speaking during the decoration ceremony, CP Tijani described the elevation as recognition of Dr Ojo’s professional competence, dedication and contributions to healthcare service delivery within the police system.
“This promotion is a recognition of his professional competence, dedication and invaluable contributions to healthcare service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force,” the commissioner said.
He urged the newly promoted superintendent to remain committed to his responsibilities, maintain the ethics of the medical profession and uphold the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Force operates both an Inspectorate cadre and a senior officer cadre, and officers with specialised qualifications such as medicine, law and engineering may be considered for conversion into the senior cadre subject to approval by the Police Service Commission.
However, direct movement from Inspector to Superintendent of Police represents a significant leap in status and responsibility.
The Lagos State Police Command congratulated SP (Dr) Opeyemi Ojo on the promotion and wished him continued success in his career and service to the nation.
