The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media alert claiming that bandits had invaded communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo and other parts of the state, warning that the fake report has already led to the tragic death of an innocent resident.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said there was no security crisis, invasion, or coordinated attack on schools or communities anywhere in Lagos State.
The Command described the widely circulated posts and accompanying graphics as unfounded and deliberately designed to create fear, panic and apprehension among residents.
“The claims contained in the circulating posts are false, misleading, unfounded, and intended to create unnecessary fear, panic, and apprehension among residents,” the statement said.
The police reassured Lagosians that schools across the state remain safe and that security agencies have maintained adequate surveillance and operational presence in all communities.
However, the Command revealed that the spread of the false alarm had already triggered a deadly mob action that claimed the life of a 24-year-old commercial motorcyclist identified as Kulaha Ayuba.
According to the police, some youths in the affected community allegedly believed the false reports that bandits had invaded the area and consequently branded Ayuba a Fulani bandit.
The victim was reportedly attacked and fatally assaulted by the mob, while his motorcycle was stolen. His body was later discovered in a swamp.
Following swift police intervention, 15 suspects were arrested in connection with the killing and are currently being investigated.
The Command assured the public that all persons found culpable would be prosecuted.
The police condemned the deliberate spread of unverified information capable of inciting public disorder, ethnic profiling, hatred, and mob violence.
It warned that individuals responsible for originating, publishing, or circulating false information likely to cause public alarm, ethnic tension, violence, or chaos would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while continuing their normal activities without fear.
He urged members of the public to verify security information through official channels and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or emergency response units rather than relying on social media rumours.
The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring Lagos residents that adequate security measures remain in place across the state to sustain the prevailing peace and security.
