A house owner in Ikoyi, Lagos, risks losing the property to the state government after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the sealing up of the premises for contravening the state’s Greening Law.
The state government in a statement posted on its verified Twitter handle, @followslasg, says the unidentified owner cut down some trees in his compound without obtaining the permission of relevant agencies.
The statement reads:
“The Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, sealed a building at 10A Alexander Road, Ikoyi for contravening the Greening Law of the State after an unauthorised felling of trees without the appropriate permit and approval from the State government.
“The enforcement for compliance, which was jointly carried LASPARK and LASEPA, was based on the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the property owner refused to comply with the abatement notice earlier served to him by LASPARK.
“Speaking during the enforcement exercise, the General Manager of LASPARK, Mrs Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, maintained that the action became expedient in order to establish the need for property owners to comply with the greening provisions of the govt.
“Also, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, recalled that the two Agencies swung into action by visiting the property to authenticate the validity of the claim and surprisingly met the gate under lock and key hence the need for this action.
“She commended the concerned citizen who alerted the government and further enjoined the public to support the greening vision of the State by serving as environmental watchdogs in the preservation of nature in the interest of all.”
