The Lagos State Government has clarified its policy on solar power installation in government-owned housing estates, following a viral video that suggested residents are broadly required to pay permit fees to install solar energy systems.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Wale Ajetunmobi, the government said the claims circulating online were based on a misunderstanding of existing housing regulations.

According to him, the Lagos State Government does not charge all residents across the state for permits to install solar power systems in private homes.

He stressed that the policy applies only to occupants of government-owned social housing estates, where specific guidelines govern structural alterations.

He explained that residents of such estates are required to obtain approval before carrying out any modifications, including the installation of solar power systems, as these are considered alterations to the original design and infrastructure of the buildings.

The government noted that the estates already have centralised electricity infrastructure, and any additional energy installations could affect shared facilities and building integrity if not properly regulated.

Ajetunmobi stated that all proposed alterations must be submitted for approval through the Physical Planning and Survey departments of the Ministry of Housing, followed by material compliance checks and post-installation inspections.

He added that installations such as solar systems are often carried out in shared or communal areas within the estates, making regulatory oversight necessary to ensure safety and uniformity.

According to him, the monitoring exercise seen in the viral video involved officials from the Ministry’s Monitoring and Compliance Unit, who were enforcing established estate regulations.

The government also highlighted previous incidents in which unapproved structural alterations in estates had led to safety concerns, including roof damage and fire hazards, underscoring the need for strict compliance with approval processes.

Residents were therefore advised to always seek formal permission from the relevant authorities before undertaking any external or structural modifications within government-managed estates.

The statement reiterated that where unapproved alterations affect shared infrastructure, other residents often hold the government accountable, making regulatory enforcement essential to estate management.
