The Lagos State House of Assembly has firmly dismissed recent claims by impeached Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, asserting that its decision to remove him and install Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker remains final.
In a strongly worded statement, the lawmakers declared their unity behind Meranda, while criticising Obasa’s stance as “uncalled for and unparliamentary.”
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 by a two-thirds majority of the Assembly, claimed at a rally today, in Lagos, that the process of his removal was irregular, insisting he remains the legitimate Speaker until due procedures are followed.
His statement has sparked political tension, as it contrasts sharply with the Assembly’s firm position on his ouster.
“We unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Obasa as Speaker for the 10th Assembly, but we also took a majority decision to remove him. That decision stands,” the Assembly stated in a release signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode.
The lawmakers criticised Obasa’s refusal to accept the outcome, warning that his posture could destabilise the Assembly. “I appeal to the former Speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony as others have done. His intransigence will heat up the polity and will not augur well,” the statement read.
The Assembly also reaffirmed the constitutional rights of its members to remove principal officers, including the Speaker, and vowed to resist any attempts to disrupt the legislative process. “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” the statement concluded.
Obasa’s impeachment has become a focal point of public attention, with analysts debating the implications of his claims and the Assembly’s response.
While Obasa’s political future remains uncertain, the lawmakers’ steadfast support for Speaker Meranda signals a clear intent to move forward without him.
