Officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have arrested some residents of Aboru in Alimosho Local Government Area after their children were reportedly shown in an online video emptying refuse into a gutter during a heavy downpour last week.

The LAWMA enforcement team, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the Environment, Mr. Ayo Williams, reportedly stormed the residences of the alleged defaulters on Olumo street, on Sunday to effect their arrest.

The state government in a post on its verified Twitter handle, @followlasg, disclosed that those arrested would be prosecuted in accordance with the law to serve as an example to other residents.

The post read: “The Enforcement team of LAWMA this morning apprehended the parents of children who emptied bags of waste into the drainage channel during a heavy downpour in the course of the week.

“The parents of these children would be prosecuted according to the law. The act is in defiance to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s directive and pronouncement on zero tolerance to improper waste disposal

“This attitude and several others that have gone unnoticed are contributory factors to flooding issue being experienced in some quarters across the State.

“The arrest of these individuals followed a video that revealed this misdemeanor on the social media during the week.

“Lagosians are urged to be Government’s watch-dogs in this regard. Kindly report unfriendly attitudes to the State Government for proper action.”
