The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, for suggesting that internet fraudsters (“Yahoo boys”) are “geniuses” who only need guidance.
In a Sunday statement, APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo condemned Obi’s remarks as “morally reprehensible” and a trivialization of criminal behavior. Oladejo argued that “There’s nothing genius about crime,” and accused Obi of suffering from “moral confusion” by simultaneously condemning corruption and “glorifying cybercrime.”
The APC also alleged that Obi was desperately seeking political relevance through controversial statements and called on him to apologize to Nigerian youth for his rhetoric, which they warned could encourage moral indiscipline. Obi’s original comment was made at a youth conference in Onitsha, where he reportedly urged young people to channel their intelligence into productive ventures and focus on character over the reckless pursuit of money.
