The Lagos State Government has announced planned movement restrictions across the state as it prepares to commence its monthly environmental sanitation exercise on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6.30am and 8.30am, during which vehicular and human movement will be restricted to allow residents to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage systems.
The initiative follows the symbolic flag-off of the programme along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor on March 14, 2026, marking the formal reintroduction of a coordinated state-wide sanitation drive.
Wahab explained that during the two-hour window, movement across Lagos will be controlled to ensure full participation in the cleaning exercise, while enforcement officers will be deployed across all local government areas.
According to him, personnel from the Ministry of the Environment, LASEPA, the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force, LAWMA, and local government sanitation inspectors will conduct inspections before, during, and after the exercise to ensure compliance.
He warned that defaulters will be sanctioned in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
LAWMA will also deploy intervention trucks to evacuate bagged waste generated during the sanitation period, ensuring prompt disposal and environmental cleanliness.
In addition, the state government announced a reward system to encourage participation, including awards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street across Lagos.
Wahab urged residents to take ownership of the initiative, describing it as a collective responsibility aimed at promoting a cleaner and more sustainable city.
He said the sanitation exercise is part of broader efforts by the government to improve environmental hygiene, reduce flooding risks caused by blocked drainage channels, and enhance public health outcomes across the state.
