Vigilant motorists prevented a young lady from committing suicide in Lagos today.
The unidentified lady had attempted to throw herself in the way of speeding vehicles at the CMS end of the third mainland bridge on Lagos Island.
Her actions nearly resulted in a major accident as motorists made desperate attempts to avoid hitting her.
She was however prevented, from carrying out her plan, by some of the motorists, who managed to park their vehicles on the bridge to restrain her.
The scene attracted some policemen and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LATSMA) who intervened to calm the victim down.
She later narrated her ordeal to the crowd.
According an eyewitness, Kehinde Rhoda Akinrinmade, who posted a video of the incident on her Facebook page, the lady said she decided to commit suicide because she was jobless and had spent her entire savings on a mysterious illness.
The Facebook post by the eyewitness reads: “This lady was about to commit suicide on CMS bridge. Some cars were damaged because at first we thought she was blind and then some people rushed to hold her and she kept crying.
“Some of us got down from our cars. Trust me to ask questions. She said she was fed up with life. She said she was a house maid and fell ill at the place she last worked. They took her to a church and after they had spent almost all her savings on her, she told them she wanted to leave to find another job. She thought life has not been fair to her and she just wanted to die.
“Thanks to NURTW officials, conductors, LATSMA officials and the policemen that ran after her. We tried to calm her down. We spoke to her and told her to trust in GOD. I gave her my number to call later. I will help with the little I have. Funny thing, though. She doesn’t have a phone but I pray she gets a way to call me later.”
The eyewitness said the lady was later taken into one of the buses that parked to assist her.
