Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has confirmed that 75 residents of Kaiama were killed in a terrorist attack targeting local Muslims who reportedly refused to comply with extremist demands.
The Governor, who visited Kaiama on Wednesday evening in the company of service chiefs and members of his cabinet, described the killings as a massacre carried out by extremists preaching a “strange doctrine.”
He commiserated with the affected community and met with the Emir of Kaiama to assess the situation on the ground.
Governor AbdulRazaq announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate deployment of an army battalion to counter the attackers.
The military response has been codenamed ‘Operation Savannah Shield’, with a commander appointed to lead the offensive.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed on social media that “help is on the way for the beleaguered people of Kaiama and others as President Tinubu orders the deployment of a military battalion, the appointment of a commander and the start of Operation Savannah Shield.”
The attack in Kaiama is part of a growing pattern of extremist violence in Nigeria, with security agencies intensifying efforts to protect vulnerable communities in the region.
Operation Savannah Shield is expected to involve both offensive and stabilisation measures aimed at preventing further attacks and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
AbdulRazaq’s visit and the swift presidential response underscore the federal and state governments’ commitment to securing the area and supporting victims of the attack.
Local authorities have called for calm and cooperation with security forces as the counter-offensive unfolds.
