Kwara Gov Announces N10M Support for Family of Forest Guard Killed in Clash with Kidnappers

Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has announced a N10 million support package for the family of a forest guard, Mr Omotosho Olawuyi Samuel, who was killed during an encounter with suspected kidnappers in Koro community of Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement shared on his official X account, the governor described the late operative as gallant and courageous, saying he fell in the line of duty while confronting criminal elements.

“I am saddened by the death of a gallant forest guard, Mr Omotosho Olawuyi Samuel, who fell during a courageous encounter with some kidnappers in Koro community of Ekiti Local Government Area,” Abdulrazaq wrote.

He commended the forest guards and local vigilantes who reportedly pursued the fleeing suspects, describing their actions as patriotic.

“I commend the bravery and patriotism of the forest guards and local vigilantes who launched an assault on the fleeing kidnappers,” the governor added.

Abdulrazaq extended condolences to the deceased’s family and colleagues, offering prayers for strength and comfort.

“I send heartfelt commiserations to the family of Mr Samuel and his comrades who bravely fought along with him. We ask God to give succour to them.”

As part of the state government’s response, the governor announced financial support for the bereaved family.

“As a token of our government’s gratitude for his sacrifice as a hero of the people’s collective war against banditry, I hereby announce a N10m support for the family of the slain operative.”

Koro and surrounding communities in Kwara North have in recent years experienced security challenges linked to kidnapping and banditry, reflecting broader concerns across parts of north-central Nigeria. Forested areas have often been exploited by armed groups, prompting several state governments to strengthen local security architecture.

Kwara State operates a network of forest guards and works with community vigilantes to complement federal security agencies, including the police and the military. The initiative forms part of wider subnational efforts to curb rural banditry and protect farming communities.

Abdulrazaq’s administration has previously reiterated its commitment to supporting local security outfits and improving intelligence gathering at community level.

Authorities have yet to release full operational details of the encounter in Koro, including the number of suspects involved or whether arrests were made.
