The former head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), DCP Abba Kyari, has narrated his experience during Tuesday night’s attack on Kuje prison, Abuja, by suspected terrorists.
Kyari, who is undergoing trial for alleged drug trafficking, is being detained at the facility alongside some other high-profile detainees.
Vanguard quoted Kyari as saying that only God kept him and the other inmates alive as the attackers operated unhindered for nearly three hours.
‘’Only God saved us today (yesterday). For over two hours and 45 minutes, more than 300 terrorists took over the Kuje prison in Abuja with GPMGs, Bombs, RPGs, Many Rifles, etc,” Kyari reportedly said.
‘The total population of the Kuje Prison is about 1,476, and only 111 of the inmates chose not to escape.
NewsmakersNG learned that those that decided not to escape include former Governor Jolly Nyame of Taraba State, Farouk Lawal, four of Kyari’s former colleagues in the IRT, a retired Air Vice Marshal, and 107 other inmates who have less than three months to complete their jail terms.
