The Kogi State Government has issued a query to the Ohi of Okene, Alhaji Mamman Isi Okatahi, over his failure to attend the recent turbaning ceremony of the Odeyi Hausa/Fulani in Ebiraland, an event hosted by the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland.

In a letter dated October 9, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Emmiloa A. Enimola, the monarch was directed to provide a written explanation within 48 hours, stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

The letter, titled: ‘Letter of Query,’ expressed the government’s disapproval of any conduct by traditional rulers deemed capable of misleading the people or undermining the values of the traditional institution.

It emphasised that every organisation, including the traditional system, thrives on unity and harmony, adding that the Ohi’s repeated absence from major cultural events had attracted official concern.

According to the letter, the state government had observed that on several occasions, the Ohi of Okene failed to honour invitations for key events, including the turbaning of some Hausa/Fulani in Ebiraland by the Ohinoyi of Ebira land, a move the ministry described as inconsistent with the collaborative spirit expected among royal fathers.

“The State Government frowns at a situation where a traditional ruler who is to serve as a role model and leader to his subjects misleads the people and thereby degrades the value of the traditional institution,” the query reads in part.

It warned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation within 48 hours could attract disciplinary action in line with existing regulations governing the conduct of traditional rulers in the state.

The query to the Ohi of Okene marks another instance of the state government’s increasing scrutiny of the activities of royal fathers in Ebiraland.
