King Charles III has formally stripped Prince Andrew of all royal styles, titles and honours, marking one of the most dramatic disciplinary actions in modern royal history.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the decision on Wednesday, announcing that Andrew will no longer be styled “Prince” or “His Royal Highness,” and will henceforth be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
The move also includes the revocation of his titles as Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, along with his honorary military appointments and membership of the Order of the Garter.
He has also been ordered to vacate Royal Lodge, his long-time residence near Windsor Castle, where he has lived since the late 1990s. A notice has reportedly been served for the lease to be surrendered, with the Duke expected to relocate to accommodation within the Sandringham Estate, funded privately by the King.
The decision comes amid renewed public and media scrutiny of Andrew’s past associations with the late American financier, Jeffrey Epstein, and the sexual abuse allegations made by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, which he continues to deny.
Despite having stepped back from royal duties in 2019 and previously relinquished his military titles, this latest action effectively severs his formal ties with the monarchy.
Buckingham Palace, in a statement, said the measures were “deemed necessary to preserve the integrity of the Crown and its institutions.”
The Palace further emphasised that while Andrew continues to deny the allegations against him, “the gravity of the matter and the ongoing damage to the reputation of the monarchy required decisive action.”
Royal historians have described the step as unprecedented in the modern era, drawing parallels with the stripping of titles from German relatives of the royal family during the First World War in 1919.
The King’s decision is viewed as a clear signal of his determination to uphold accountability within the royal household and protect its public standing.
Andrew’s relocation to Sandringham will reportedly be arranged in the coming weeks, with discussions under way about his future security and financial support.
His removal from the royal fold underscores what many royal observers see as the firmest assertion yet of King Charles’s vision for a leaner, more disciplined monarchy.
