The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers, including one Umar Babangida, after they were spotted brandishing AK-47 rifles, ammunition and walkie-talkies in a viral video that triggered widespread concern among residents.
The other suspects were identified as Adamu Yeti, 22, and Yahaya Idris, 24.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed that the suspects were tracked and apprehended through a combination of forensic analysis and intelligence-led investigations conducted by operatives of the command.
According to the police commissioner, investigators painstakingly analysed the viral footage and deployed intelligence assets to trace the suspects to their hideout in Runji Village, Zuba, on the outskirts of Abuja.
He said the operation culminated in a coordinated dawn raid on May 25, during which the three suspects were arrested.
The suspects had appeared in the viral video dressed in military camouflage while openly displaying AK-47 rifles, ammunition and communication gadgets, a development that sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over kidnapping activities in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Police authorities said the arrests represented a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes within the FCT and its neighbouring communities.
Sanusi assured residents that investigations are continuing to uncover possible accomplices and determine the full extent of the suspects’ alleged criminal activities.
The police boss reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information that could aid security operations.
The successful operation has attracted commendation from residents and security stakeholders, who described the arrests as a significant step in the fight against kidnapping and organised crime in the nation’s capital.
