Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, has warned motorists in Lagos to desist from having transactions with hawkers on the roads.
According to Owoseni, it is against the law in Lagos to buy and sell anything on the road.
“Apart from being a crime, those who patronise these hawkers are exposing themselves to danger,” he said. “We’ve had several reports. But people get sentimental, when the police make arrests. They will say the police don’t want people to eat.
“There have been situations when these hawkers run into on-coming vehicles or jump into the lagoon, when law enforcement agents chase them.”
Owoseni spoke at his Ikeja office on Monday, while receiving a journalist, Mrs Ronke Kehinde, who almost became a victim, after accepting a flyer suspected to have been laced with a substance on the road.
He said that the best way to prevent such occurrence was to stop receiving anything from anyone on the road.
Owoseni has detailed special investigators to work on Mrs Kehinde’s report and do a forensic analysis of the mysterious flyer.
He, however, noted that the chances of finding the suspects through forensic analyses are slim because of time lapse and inaccurate information in fingerprint registration.
