Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Conservative Party, has sacked former Cabinet minister, Robert Jenrick, from the Shadow Cabinet, removed the whip and suspended his party membership with immediate effect.

The decision followed receipt of what she described as “clear, irrefutable evidence” that he was secretly plotting to defect to Reform UK in a manner designed to damage both his Shadow Cabinet colleagues and the wider Conservative Party.

The announcement, posted on X, comes amid mounting tensions within the party and has been widely discussed on social media.

Badenoch wrote on X, “The British public are tired of political psychodrama and so am I. They saw too much of it in the last government, they’re seeing too much of it in THIS government. I will not repeat those mistakes.”

Her statement underscores the seriousness with which she views Jenrick’s alleged plotting and signals a determination to maintain party unity ahead of looming electoral challenges.

Robert Jenrick, the Shadow Minister of State for Justice and Member of Parliament for Newark, is known for his roles in housing and local government portfolios.

A defection to Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, would represent a high-profile blow to the Conservatives, particularly as Reform UK seeks to position itself as a national alternative appealing to voters dissatisfied with mainstream parties on issues such as immigration, taxation and post-Brexit governance.

The development reflects wider strains within the Conservative Party, which has faced declining support in polls and increasing challenges from emergent right-wing parties.

Political analysts note that defections of senior MPs to alternative parties could significantly influence marginal constituencies and destabilise party cohesion, especially in the lead-up to the next general election.

Observers on social media and within Westminster have reacted sharply.

Some Conservative MPs praised Badenoch’s decisive action, while others warned it highlights deepening factionalism and internal disputes.

Opposition parties have also seized on the incident to question Conservative stability and focus, emphasising that political infighting distracts from pressing issues such as healthcare, the economy and housing.

Reform UK, under Nigel Farage, has leveraged discontent with the mainstream parties, portraying itself as a credible alternative for voters frustrated by perceived establishment politics.

Analysts suggest that Jenrick’s alleged defection, if confirmed, would bolster the party’s credibility and potentially shift the balance of power on the right of the political spectrum.

At the time of writing, neither Jenrick nor Reform UK had issued a formal response confirming the alleged plot.
