Police in Kebbi State have arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby girl by burying her alive in a shallow grave.
The incident happened on June 25, in the Nasarawa area of Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.
According to police reports, Atiku tied three wrappers around the baby’s neck, covered her mouth, and buried her in a bush near Malam Yaro village.
The crime came to light the following morning when a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed disturbed soil on his farmland that looked like a fresh grave.
He alerted villagers, who dug up the site and found the baby miraculously still alive.
She was rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition was stable.
Police detectives later arrested Atiku, who confessed to the crime during interrogation. She has since been arraigned in court following investigations.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable.
He reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence.
The CP commended the wife of Governor Nasir Idris, Hajia Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, along with civil society groups, for stepping in to support the rescued baby and her custodian, Alhaji Muhammad.
Police spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, urged parents and community leaders to protect children in their care and resist harmful practices often driven by poverty or desperation.
He added that the case would serve as a deterrent to others.
