Tension erupted during the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Katsina United and Barau FC when Barau’s player Nana Abraham was attacked and left with a deep neck wound after home supporters allegedly invaded the pitch.
The violence reportedly followed Barau’s equaliser by Orji Kalu in the 69th minute.
Barau FC confirmed the attack via its official social-media channel, stating: “70′ – The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”
Contrary to earlier fears, respected sports journalist, Godwin Enakhena, posted on X that Nana Abraham is not dead, offering crucial clarification amid the chaotic reports: “Barau FC player, Nana Abraham who was injured … He’s not dead.”
Images circulated online show Abraham bleeding from a serious wound to his neck while match officials and teammates attempted to restore calm.
The match at Katsina’s stadium was temporarily halted as security operatives intervened, and later resumed to end 1-1.
No formal statement has yet been published by the NPFL or Katsina United regarding the incident and potential disciplinary measures.
The attack revives concerns about fan violence and inadequate stadium security across Nigerian football, following a similar pitch-invasion incident last month during a match at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, leading to heavy sanctions for the club involved.
