Twenty-five schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Kebbi State, have reportedly regained their freedom following successful negotiations with their captors.

National security agencies facilitated the release, employing dialogue and mediation rather than military operations.

The abduction occurred in the early hours of November 17, when armed gunmen stormed the school, killing the vice principal and escaping with the students.

The attack prompted nationwide alarm over the safety of schools in Nigeria’s north-west, a region repeatedly targeted by bandits and kidnappers.

The girls’ release comes after days of intense search operations, including coordination between national security agencies and local vigilante groups.

Community leaders and parents welcomed the development but emphasised the need for stronger protection measures for schools, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Nigeria has faced a series of high-profile school kidnappings in recent years, highlighting persistent security gaps in the north-west.

While reports of the girls’ release are widespread in Nigerian media, official confirmation from the Kebbi State Government or national security agencies is awaited.
