Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has approved the appointment of Prince Adesuyi Haastrup as the new Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesha land.
The announcement was made in a press release signed by the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, with reference number OSG/INFPUB/1224.
The decision, ratified during the Osun State Executive Council meeting yesterday, follows the death of the former Owa Obokun, Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, on September 11, 2024.
According to the statement, the appointment was made in line with the Chiefs’ Law of Osun State, 2002 (Cap 25).
Adeleke congratulated Prince Haastrup on his appointment, urging the people of Ijesha land to unite and support their new traditional ruler to promote peace and development in the region.
Prince Adesuyi Haastrup, from the Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House, emerged as the Owa-elect during a transparent selection process conducted by Ijesha kingmakers at the Ilesa West Local Government Secretariat on Friday, December 20, 2024.
The process involved ten candidates from the ruling house vying for the throne. Haastrup emerged victorious after securing the highest number of votes in a process supervised by the Head of Local Government Administration in Ilesa West, Mrs. Felicia Olabimtan.
The kingmakers, consisting of six Iwora mefa and seven agba Ijesa, played a crucial role in the election.
The Iwora mefa included the Obaala of Ilesa, High Chief Ibitoye; Ogboni Ipole, Oba Omokehinde Oyeleye; and Ogboni Ilesa, High Chief Saka Fapohunda. Among the agba Ijesa were the Risawe of Ilesa, High Chief Adefioye Adedeji, and the Lejoka of Ilesa, High Chief Omoniyi Ojo.
In a statement, Isaac Haastrup, the Public Relations Officer of the Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House, described the process as fair and transparent.
“Looja Clement Adesuyi Haastrup has been elected as the Owa Obokun Ajimoko III, the paramount ruler of Ijesha land,” he noted.
The Governor also approved the appointment of Prince Johnson Adekanmi Abikoye as the Asaoni of Ora Igbomina, following the death of Oba Tinuoye Atolagbe on November 19, 2023.
