A fire outbreak occurred today at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, prompting an emergency response from aviation authorities.

The incident was confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, which said its firefighting teams were immediately deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading within the airport facility.

In an initial statement, the authority said: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the public of a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to contain the situation. No loss of life has been recorded.”

FAAN later issued an update explaining that emergency operations were still ongoing as responders worked to fully bring the situation under control.

“Emergency response operations are ongoing as our firefighting teams continue efforts to fully contain and curtail the fire, while the orderly evacuation of passengers and airport personnel is in progress,” the authority said.

According to FAAN, additional support had been mobilised to strengthen the emergency response.

“To strengthen response efforts, FAAN has activated mutual aid arrangements and called for reinforcements from the Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant emergency agencies,” the statement added.

The authority reassured travellers and the general public that safety remained the priority.

“We wish to reassure the public that no loss of life has been recorded at this time, and all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property,” FAAN said.

Officials also promised that verified information would be released as the situation develops.

“Further verified updates will be communicated as the situation develops,” the authority stated.

The airport, Nigeria’s busiest international gateway, has experienced a number of operational incidents in recent years, while authorities have already announced plans for major rehabilitation and expansion works at the ageing terminal.

Emergency teams were still at the scene as of the latest update.
