The worshippers abducted during a deadly attack on a Christ Apostolic Church crusade in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have reportedly regained their freedom after 67 days in captivity.
However, one of the 15 worshippers kidnapped during the attack reportedly died while in captivity, adding to the growing death toll from the incident that has shocked residents of the state.
The development was disclosed by Omo Edema, a media personality who had consistently interviewed relatives of the abducted worshippers and provided updates throughout the ordeal.
According to him, the victims were released around midnight on Friday and are currently receiving medical evaluation and treatment.
He said the survivors are in critical physical and emotional condition following their ordeal.
Edema also claimed that the victims secured their freedom without any noticeable intervention by government authorities or security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ekiti State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the reported release or the death of one of the victims.
The abduction occurred when suspected gunmen invaded an open air Christ Apostolic Church crusade at Eda Oniyo-Ekiti on April 28.
During the attack, the assailants shot dead the guest minister officiating at the programme before abducting 15 worshippers and taking them to an unknown destination.
The killing of the visiting cleric and the mass abduction triggered widespread outrage across Ekiti State, with religious leaders, community groups and residents calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
