The federal government today announced that June 12 will now be marked as Democracy Day in the country.
The government also announced the posthumous award of the highest honour in Nigeria, GCFR, to the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola.
The late human rights lawyer and democracy activist, Chief Gani Fawehimi and Abiola’s running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe were also honoured with the award of GCON.
The three receipients will be ceremoniously honoured on June 12.
President Muhammadu Buhari announced these developments in a tweet this evening.
The tweet says: “Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Govt has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola.”
