Carter Centre Denies Death of 99-Year-Old Ex-U.S. President and Obasanjo’s Ally

Death rumours of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a renowned advocate for human rights, has been debunked by the Carter Centre.

The denial followed a viral fake report that Carter passed away on July 23 at 1:34 a.m. at his home in Plains, Georgia. The report claimed that Carter died peacefully with his family at his side.

Carter, a close ally of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, played a pivotal role in reconciling a political rift between Obasanjo and a Nigerian politician the late Chief Bola Ige, who was out to contest for presidency against Obasanjo.

Serving from 1977 to 1981, Carter’s presidency was marked by significant foreign policy achievements, including the Camp David Accords—a landmark peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. His tenure also saw the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with China and the controversial Panama Canal treaties. Domestically, Carter’s administration was notable for installing solar panels on the White House, creating the Department of Energy, deregulating various industries, and enacting major environmental and educational reforms.

Carter often cited his 77-year marriage to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter as his greatest achievement. Reflecting on her passing last November, he described her as a source of unwavering support and guidance.

Carter has four children – Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy—along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His grandson passed away in 2015.
