The International Women’s Society of Nigeria (IWSN) has offered free medical test and give out foodstuffs among others to residents of Ikate, Elegushi, and Igbokushi areas of Lekki in Lagos State.
At least 900 residents including widows and children received the items which comprise of clothes, shoes, raw foods among other things to make the residents happy.
Speaking to reporters, the chairperson social service committee of IWSN, Mrs Nike Bakare Ajayi, said that the event was to impact on the community of Lekki where it was held and that it would help the indigent persons living in the locality.
“What we did was to let the people come to have a free medical check-up, collect food both raw and cooked one; clothes with other items, and relax. I want to say our Society has been generous over the years in giving back to the society,” she said.
She noted that the major objective of the event, which was the first of its kind was to enable people living in the locality to feel very well and happy.
She said that the Society was planning to do similar things across most of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps because they needed urgent help.
The wife of Oba Elegushi, Olori Sekinat Aramide Elegushi, assisted in giving the items to the benefactors.
She thanked the Society and prayed that the almighty God would continue to bless and empower IWSN to do more.
IWSN President, Mrs Nkoli Ogbolu, in an interview with journalists, described the “Soup Kitchen Day” as a universal concept of feeding the needy in the society.
“What you see today has been happening in the western worlds, like in the UK, the US and other developed countries where volunteers come together and give back to the community.”
She added that the gesture was first ever and the idea came when she assumed office in March 2019 and after meeting with members it was agreed that the society would have a programme to help the indigent in the locality where they operate.
She thanked Oba Elegushi and his wife, Olori Sekinat Elegushi. She said they were very generous to the International Women’s Society.
The president further stressed that the “society has been at the forefront of helping the less privileged especially the oppressed in the country”.
She recalled that a few years ago the society visited the internally displaced persons in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, where donations were made to the displaced persons to cushion their pains.
Mrs Ogbolu assured Nigerians that the event would hold annually.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Aderonke Oduniyi, thanked the society for their kind gesture and prayed to God to sustain them in their good work to the society.
