The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Adamawa State that left at least 29 people dead, according to a statement released via Telegram and reported by Reuters.

The assault, which targeted a rural community in the Gombi area, was carried out by gunmen who opened fire on residents over several hours, killing dozens and destroying property, local officials and residents said.

Officials in Adamawa confirmed the scale of the attack, describing it as one of the latest incidents in a growing wave of violence affecting Nigeria’s north-east.

The state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, condemned the killings as tragic and unacceptable, pledging continued efforts to restore security in affected communities.

The Islamic State’s claim, circulated through its media channels, did not immediately clarify which of its affiliates operating in Nigeria carried out the assault.

The attack adds to longstanding insecurity in Nigeria’s north-east, where insurgent violence has persisted for more than a decade.

Armed groups, including factions linked to Islamic State and Boko Haram, frequently carry out raids on villages, abductions and attacks on infrastructure, exploiting weak security presence in remote areas.

Security experts have warned of a resurgence in militant activity across the region, with recent incidents suggesting improved coordination and increased operational capacity among extremist groups.
