Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has personally approved and endorsed a global fundraising campaign to cover his mounting medical and legal expenses.

In an internal memo dated October 15, 2025, and signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group announced that Kanu had given his “full consent and personal blessing” for the initiative, urging all members and supporters across the world to contribute.

The statement lamented that despite Kanu’s prolonged detention and health challenges, IPOB as a collective body had yet to organise any official financial support for his medical treatment or legal defence.

According to Powerful, only a few individuals had been sustaining the Global Defence Consortium, a team reportedly working to preserve Kanu’s life and fight his legal battles.

“For almost five years, our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been left to carry the heaviest cross alone. Apart from a few good men and women who have quietly stood by him, no single organised fundraising or major contribution has been made by the IPOB family worldwide,” the memo read in part.

The fundraising event is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 2pm Eastern Time (US & Canada) and will hold via Zoom, with the meeting details and contact information made public for participants.

Powerful cautioned members against fake accounts and misinformation allegedly sponsored by agents of the Nigerian government, urging all IPOB families from “Australia to Canada, Argentina to Japan” to rise and contribute.

“Onyendu himself gave his full consent and personal blessing for this fundraising. He mandated me, as his official spokesperson, to make this appeal to every true member and supporter of IPOB to rise and contribute,” the statement emphasised.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021, faces terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government.

His prolonged detention despite multiple court rulings for his release has drawn criticism from local and international human rights groups.

The IPOB leader has repeatedly complained of deteriorating health while in detention, with his lawyers alleging that he has been denied access to adequate medical care.

With this global fundraising appeal, Kanu appears to be reaching out directly to his global network of supporters for renewed solidarity and financial assistance as his legal and medical battles intensify.
