IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Arrested, Extradited to Nigeria

Malik Yahya/

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested.

Details of his arrest were still sketchy at the time of filing this story, but NewsmakersNG understands that he has been extradited to Nigeria to face trial.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is currently addressing a press conference, in Abuja, on Kanu’s arrest.

He said the IPOB leader was arrested on Sunday and would soon be brought before the Federal High Court where he jumped bail.

Malami also disclosed at the joint press briefing with the police and the State Security Service (SSS) that international collaborative efforts with security agencies led to Kanu’s arrest and repatriation to Nigeria.

Kanu and others are facing charges bordering on treasonable felony instituted against them at the federal high court in Abuja in response to years of agitation for the independent Republic of Biafra by IPOB.

He was granted bail in April 2017 for health reasons but skipped bail after flouting some of the conditions given to him by the court.

Kanu fled the country in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State.

Owing to his absence in court, Justice Binta Nyako, who granted him bail, revoked it and ordered that he should be arrested.

Kanu, however, dismissed the arrest warrant issued against him and vowed to remain abroad to continue agitating for Biafra.
