The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially announced the cancellation of its long-standing Monday sit-at-home directive across the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, effective Monday, 9 February 2026.

In a statement issued today by the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB says the decision followed a directive from its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The statement described the move as part of efforts to restore peace, normal economic activity and routine life in the region.

According to the statement, all markets, schools, offices, transport services and other businesses must resume fully from Monday, with no justification for staying at home under the cancelled order.

Powerful stressed that any attempt to enforce sit-at-home going forward would be considered an act against the directive of the IPOB leader and detrimental to the region’s welfare.

“This is the clear and unequivocal order of the Supreme Leader of IPOB,” the statement read, adding that anyone identified as enforcing the old sit-at-home order would be confronted.

The press release also warned against false-flag operations or intimidation attempts designed to keep residents indoors, urging citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding as they return to their normal routines.

IPOB’s Monday sit-at-home directive, first introduced in August 2021, had at times profoundly affected economic and social life in the South-East, often keeping markets, schools and businesses closed.

The order was widely observed in earlier years as part of the group’s protest over Kanu’s arrest and prolonged detention by the Federal Government.

With this latest announcement, residents in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states are now being encouraged to resume everyday life and commercial activities without fear.
