Police authorities in Nigeria have called on members of the public to explore the multiple channels of communication available to them in addressing public grievances.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Mr Bala Ciroma, made the appeal today at the unveiling of the Public Awareness Campaign to Stakeholders on Policing Accountability held at the Unity Fountain Abuja.
The CP, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Sola Okediji, charged members of the public to always bring up cases against individuals and Police personnel to the Police Complaints Bureau (PCB).
He said that the Police hierarchy, in a bid to address many grievances by the public, had opened up various units to receive and attend to complaints against the conduct of police personnel and other members of the public.
He listed some of these complaints units to include the Public Complaints Bureau, the Servicom Unit, the Provost office and the CP’s Mentoring and Monitoring Unit (CMMU).
He gave out the following phone numbers as Police Control Room lines: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883 adding that they are open to the public for complaints.
Other senior police officers, who man various units, spoke at the event. They appealed to members of the public to report cases of violation of their rights, assault and molestation to these units of the Police Force.
The unveiling ceremony which was anchored by a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Austin Iwar, was to ensure that the police are accountable to the public in terms of prompt response to complaints.
