The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official dates for upcoming legislative bye-elections and the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

According to the schedule released by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the bye-elections will take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, across 16 constituencies in 12 states. These include two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and nine state assembly seats.

The elections are expected to involve over 3.5 million registered voters from 32 local government areas, 356 registration areas, and nearly 7,000 polling units.

However, INEC clarified that bye-elections will not be held in Khana II Constituency in Rivers State, where a state of emergency is in place, and Talata Mafara South in Zamfara State, due to ongoing litigation.

In preparation for the 2027 general elections, INEC also announced the resumption of voter registration nationwide. The online pre-registration portal will open on Monday, August 18, 2025, while in-person registration at INEC offices in the 36 states, the FCT, and all 774 local government areas will begin a week later on Monday, August 25, 2025.

For Anambra State, which has a governorship election scheduled for November 8, a special CVR exercise will run from July 8 to July 17, 2025. The registration will take place across all 326 wards in the state, from 9am to 3pm daily, including weekends.

This window will accommodate new registrants, voters requesting transfers, and those seeking replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Yakubu urged political parties to adhere strictly to the approved timetable, especially the deadlines for the conduct of primaries from July 17 to 21 and the submission of nomination forms between July 22 and 26.

He also noted that campaigns for the bye-elections must end at midnight on August 14, just 24 hours before voting begins.

He emphasised that timely compliance is necessary to allow the Commission to finalise preparations and publish the list of candidates, giving the public an opportunity to raise objections if necessary.
