Troops of the Nigerian Army have uncovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of two personnel, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
The discovery was made during a clearance operation on Friday, along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, where forces targeted a stronghold linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.
According to the Army, the mission was driven in part by efforts to locate the remains of the two personnel, whose killing drew national attention after they were reportedly seized and murdered by suspected IPOB/ESN operatives in May 2022.
Troops advancing on the hideout came under heavy attack but repelled multiple ambushes, forcing the gunmen to retreat.
A subsequent search of the camp led to the discovery of shallow graves suspected to hold the remains of the slain couple.
The remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities.
Military authorities said they are also engaging with the families to ensure proper identification and dignified burial arrangements.
The Army described the find as a significant step towards justice for the fallen personnel, noting that it highlights what it called the “brutal nature” of the group’s activities in the South East.
It added that operations in the region would continue, with a focus on dismantling criminal networks and restoring security.
