In a renewed offensive against illegal mining, the Niger State Government has arrested two foreign nationals accused of engaging in unauthorised mining activities in the state.
The suspects were caught during an inspection of the Zuzungi mining site and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with extant laws.
Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammed Qasim Danjuma, disclosed the development during the enforcement visit, describing the arrests as part of a broader strategy to sanitize the mining sector and curb illicit exploitation of the state’s mineral wealth.
The inspection team, which included the Permanent Secretary, top directors of the ministry, and security operatives, moved against illegal operators in the area in what officials described as a decisive enforcement action.
Danjuma reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, warning that all operators must strictly adhere to licensing requirements, approved operational guidelines, and environmental regulations.
“This administration will not tolerate any form of illegal mining. All stakeholders must operate within the framework of the law,” he said.
He added that the crackdown underscores the state’s commitment to responsible resource management, institutional accountability, and the development of a transparent, investor-friendly mining sector.
The commissioner noted that the enforcement drive aligns with the policy direction of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and the broader goals of the New Niger Agenda, aimed at maximising the economic potential of the state’s natural resources while safeguarding host communities and the environment.
