Students of Independence Grammar School, Ondo (IGSO), have significant cause for celebration as the 1984 set of old students will donate a multi-million Naira garment factory workshop to the school.
This generous gesture is part of their 40th reunion celebrations, scheduled for Friday, June 28, 2024, at the school premises along the Ondo/Ore Expressway.
In a statement issued today, the chairman of the planning committee, Independite Victor Oriola, emphasized that the donation is a way of giving back to the school that shaped their formative years.
“As part of the commissioning, meritorious service awards will also be conferred on deserving old students to encourage others to contribute to the growth and development of the school,” Oriola said.
Among those to be honored are the national president of the Alumni Association, Mr. Dele Edokpayi, and the national treasurer, Engr. Odunayo Olasanoye. Other notable members of the 1984 set to be recognized include Chief Abayomi Fadojutimi, Alhaji Alade Ademola, Damilola Roseline Awosanya, and Damilola Raymond Adeniyi.
Explaining the motivation behind building and equipping the garment workshop, project coordinator Mr. Yinka Ijelu revealed that it was discovered that students were attending sewing classes after school hours instead of evening lessons.
“Since it’s evident that the government alone cannot address all educational needs due to economic constraints, we took it upon ourselves to contribute our modest quota to the education of the younger ones,” Ijelu said.
The 1984 set also called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to prioritize education, which has always been a pride of the state. They urged him to follow in the footsteps of previous leaders like the late Adekunle Ajasin, Adebayo Adefarati, and Dr. Olusegun Agagu, who made significant contributions to the state’s educational sector. They highlighted that while the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu is remembered for the Omotosho Industrial Hub, and Dr. Segun Mimiko for the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Governor Aiyedatiwa has the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by focusing more on education.
“We would like Governor Aiyedatiwa to write his name in gold like Dr. Agagu, who established the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, by focusing more on education,” the statement concluded.
