In a major step to tackle insecurity in Benue State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the creation of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five Police Stations to Divisional Headquarters, targeting troubled areas and difficult terrains.
The announcement, contained in a Force Headquarters statement says the restructuring followed a comprehensive appraisal of the security situation in Benue, where additional police presence and proactive deployments are urgently needed.
According to the statement, the new Daudu Area Command will cover Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions, while the Naka Area Command will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions. In addition, the police stations at Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan have been upgraded to full Divisional status.
The IGP stressed that the move is designed to bridge operational gaps, boost police visibility, and improve rapid response in conflict-prone zones. He charged the Benue State Commissioner of Police and officers to demonstrate renewed commitment and professionalism in delivering robust security.
He also directed Commissioners of Police in other states with difficult terrains to adopt similar practical, community-driven strategies to strengthen security, assuring them of necessary support from Force Headquarters.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who issued the statement, reaffirmed the IGP’s resolve to sustain proactive policing measures nationwide to secure lives and property.
