The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Nkechi Eze as the first Director of the newly created Directorate of Force Medical Services, marking a historic shift in the Nigeria Police Force’s approach to officer welfare and institutional healthcare delivery.
The development follows the elevation of the Force Medical Section into a full-fledged Directorate, a move police authorities describe as a strategic investment in the health, productivity and morale of personnel across the country.
Eze, a respected clinician and dental surgeon, brings more than 27 years of experience to the role.
A native of Agbudu in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, she earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Benin.
Her professional journey has spanned key police formations in Oyo, Ekiti, Rivers, the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos, where she championed improved medical services for police officers and their families.
Egbetokun, in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, congratulated Eze and urged her to “leverage her wealth of experience and administrative competence to reposition the Directorate as a model of excellence in police healthcare.”
He emphasised that the creation of the Directorate was not merely administrative but a bold step in reforming police welfare systems, noting that the well-being of officers is integral to the operational strength of the Force.
The appointment, according to senior police insiders, signals a deeper institutional commitment to reform under Egbetokun’s leadership, which has prioritised professionalism, modernisation and welfare enhancement within the Force.
