IGP Egbetokun Unveils Digital Registry to Fight Vehicle-Related Crimes

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is set to launch the enforcement of the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29, 2024.

According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, this initiative, spearheaded by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, aims to enhance the security of lives and property by rejuvenating and digitalizing the nation’s motor vehicle registration system.

The e-CMR will serve as a sophisticated, real-time online repository of motor vehicle data. This system is designed to support police investigations and operational activities, helping to combat vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The digital transition is expected to streamline the documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and transactions, making them more efficient and secure.

Key services such as changes in vehicle ownership, license numbers, engines, and chassis/body will become seamless with the e-CMR system, ensuring the validation of vehicle genuineness and ownership. This advancement will significantly enhance the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles and prevent the purchase of stolen vehicles by unsuspecting buyers.

In preparation for this enforcement, IGP Egbetokun has directed comprehensive publicity efforts to inform the public about the requirements, processes, and procedures of the e-CMR. The NPF urges all vehicle owners and users to promptly obtain their digitalized CMR certificates.

The Nigeria Police Force seeks the understanding and support of all Nigerians and residents in this initiative, emphasizing its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance public safety and national security. The enforcement of the e-CMR is a crucial step toward ensuring a safer environment for vehicle ownership and curbing the trend of vehicle theft and the sale of stolen vehicles in the country.
