In a night of elegance, pride, and deep institutional symbolism, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday hosted a state banquet in honour of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, celebrating his rise to the pinnacle of policing in Nigeria.
The event, held at the State House in Marina, was attended by top government officials, security chiefs, and dignitaries. It was not just a ceremonial gathering but a powerful tribute to a career defined by discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Speaking at the banquet, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the IGP as a true embodiment of the Lagos spirit: resilient, refined, and service-driven. He noted that long before Disu became Nigeria’s top cop, Lagos had already recognized and nurtured his potential.
“Lagos knew him before the world did,” the governor said, reflecting on Disu’s formative years. “The streets of this city shaped him, the lecture halls of Lagos State University refined him, and the communities of Lagos Island where he was born instilled in him the values of responsibility and service.”
Sanwo-Olu traced the IGP’s journey through the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force, highlighting his impactful tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, where he earned a reputation for operational efficiency and people-focused policing.
From tackling violent crimes to restoring public confidence in law enforcement, Disu’s leadership at the RRS became a reference point for modern policing strategies in Lagos, earning him the nickname “Good Guy” among admirers, a title the governor fondly referenced during the evening.
“His journey reminds us that greatness is not accidental. It is built on hard work, integrity, and service,” Sanwo-Olu added. “Lagos does not just raise dreamers; we raise leaders.”

The governor further emphasized that Disu’s elevation to the office of Inspector-General represents not just personal achievement but a collective victory for Lagos State, whose values, he said, are now being projected at the national level through the IGP’s leadership.
The atmosphere at the banquet reflected both celebration and affirmation, with guests applauding the IGP’s contributions to national security and his ongoing efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force through professionalism and reform-driven initiatives.
In his tribute, Sanwo-Olu described the evening as “a celebration of service and the Lagos spirit,” expressing pride that the values instilled in Disu continue to guide his leadership at the Force Headquarters.
“Tonight, we celebrate one of our own, an officer whose discipline and honour continue to inspire confidence across the country,” the governor said.
The event concluded with a toast to the IGP, whom the governor described as “the OG Good Guy of the Good Guys,” reinforcing his enduring legacy as both a son of Lagos and a servant of Nigeria.
