A hearing has begun in London to confiscate the assets of former Delta State governor, James Ibori, who plundered the public purse and laundered his ill-gotten gains in the UK.

Ibori, who was released after serving four years out of a 13 years jail term he bagged for the fraud in Britain in 2012 is being asked to pay back £117million.

He returned to Nigeria without repaying the stolen money.

Ibori — once a cashier for DIY chain Wickes in the capital — failed to declare UK criminal convictions during his rise to become governor of Delta State, Southwark crown court heard.

He then ‘abused his position of trust’ by ‘systematically’ looting funds, said prosecutor Jonathan Kinnear QC. He blew millions on luxury homes, a private jet, cars, school fees for his children and exclusive hotels. The hearing continues.
