Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, has emerged at the center of a devastating stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others critically injured in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals, including Prophetess Silekunola, who sponsored the ill-fated event.
Also detained are Fasasi Abdulahi, the principal of Islamic High School, Basorun, where the chaos unfolded, and six other key figures believed to have played roles in the catastrophic incident.
The tragic stampede occurred during a family funfair organised by the Wings Foundation, leaving a once-celebratory event in shambles.
The venue, which lacked adequate crowd control measures, became a death trap for the children in attendance.
Police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, revealed that investigations have been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police spearheading efforts to bring justice to the victims’ families.
As the city reels from the disaster, heightened security patrols have been deployed around the area to prevent further unrest.
Meanwhile, Prophetess Silekunola’s high-profile arrest has sparked widespread outrage and public scrutiny over her role in the tragic events.
The Oyo State Police Command has assured residents that justice will prevail and urged anyone with information to reach out via their emergency hotlines.
