Amid the trauma of a brutal kidnap operation that left her mother and sister nursing gunshot wounds, Amarachi Nsofor has recounted how a man she believed had come to rescue her family turned out to be one of the armed kidnappers who led them into captivity.
Nsofor, one of the victims rescued during a coordinated anti-kidnapping operation by the Lagos and Ogun State Police Commands, relived the harrowing experience in an emotional interview on Channels Television today.
Her chilling account offered a rare glimpse into the deception, terror and psychological manipulation employed by kidnappers during violent abductions.
“I thought he was a vigilante. I believed he had come to rescue us,” she recalled.
“He opened the door of the Sienna, brought us out and asked, ‘How many people did they shoot?’ My sister said she was bleeding, and my mum also.”
According to Nsofor, the stranger appeared calm and compassionate in the chaotic aftermath of the attack, giving the terrified family the impression that help had finally arrived. Moments later, however, they realised the supposed rescuer was, in fact, a member of the heavily armed gang that had ambushed them.
By then, the family had already been overwhelmed by the attack. Her mother and sister had sustained gunshot wounds as the kidnappers forced the victims away from the vehicle and marched them into the forest.
Their nightmare eventually ended after operatives of the Lagos and Ogun State Police Commands launched an intelligence-driven search operation, tracked the kidnappers to their forest hideout and engaged them in a fierce gun battle.
The tactical operation culminated in the successful rescue of the abducted victims, while the injured members of the family were evacuated for urgent medical attention.
Nsofor’s testimony underscores the calculated deception often deployed by kidnapping syndicates to disarm victims psychologically before forcing them deeper into captivity, highlighting the frightening sophistication of criminal gangs operating along the Lagos-Ogun corridor.
