Facts emerged tonight why Anambra State governor from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2003, Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju, was stopped from having a second term in office.
Fielding questions on a programme, The Candidates, on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar illustrated his passion and determination to give education to Nigerian children with an incident that happened when he was vice president in the country.
He said, “When I was vice president, I took a tour to Anambra State during the administration of Governor Mbadinuju. I found that the public schools were closed for two years. I came back and met the President. I said Mr President, this governor will never be allowed to go back. He said why. I said I found all the public schools in Anambra State overtaken by weeds. For two years they were not open. Believe me, I made sure Mbadinuju never went back.
“That is how I feel about education, because without education I will not be where I am today.”
Atiku also spoke about mistakes made, when he was serving as Vice President under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, by entrusting education funds in the hands of state and local governments without making a law to punish those who mismanaged the funds.
He said that he would correct the mistake if elected President.
