The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has claimed that he may not be alive to contest the next presidential poll, alleging that the Federal Government is deliberately frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media entrepreneur, Chude Jideonwo, excerpts of which were shared on Wednesday.
Responding to a question on whether there was a possibility that he might not eventually emerge as the NDC’s presidential candidate in 2027, the former governor of Anambra State said his concern went beyond securing the party’s ticket.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you,” Obi said.
He alleged that virtually every aspect of his personal and professional life was being deliberately obstructed.
“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.
Obi, however, stopped short of making a direct accusation against the government, insisting instead that his conclusion was based on his daily experiences.
“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day because you do things that you think would be normal. It is not normal anymore. They won’t come directly and say, ‘We’re doing this,’ but you can see their hands in virtually everything,” he said.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate further alleged that the pressure extended beyond him to other opposition politicians.
“They are attacking everybody who is in the opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all,” Obi said.
To illustrate his claims, Obi recounted a recent incident at an airport where, according to him, officials immobilised his vehicle while allowing others to proceed without hindrance, describing the episode as one of several instances of what he called deliberate harassment.
Despite the challenges, Obi maintained that he would not be deterred from speaking out on issues affecting Nigerians, saying his commitment to advocating for good governance and national development remained unwavering.
His remarks have sparked widespread reactions across political circles and social media, with supporters expressing concern over his allegations while critics questioned his assertions.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not publicly responded to Obi’s claims.
