The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detailed how a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, allegedly shot and killed one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, and injured another during a raid in Ifite, Awka, Anambra State, on Friday.

In a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC disclosed that the officers were on a legitimate operation to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters at a two-story building. The operation, which initially proceeded without incident, resulted in the arrest of 37 suspects before tragedy struck.

According to the statement, Ikechukwu, who monitored the officers’ movements through a CCTV camera at his apartment, refused to cooperate despite repeated polite requests for access. Instead, he allegedly opened fire, killing Salisu and wounding another officer who was conducting a search.

Preliminary investigations revealed Ikechukwu’s involvement in dubious online activities, including coding and fraudulent medical supply schemes. Items such as laptops, iPads, and recording devices were recovered from his residence.

The EFCC confirmed his role in internet fraud and vowed to ensure the suspect, who is currently in police custody, is prosecuted.

The EFCC raised concerns about the increasing threats posed by internet fraudsters, noting that many have resorted to carrying arms and engaging in violent crimes like kidnapping and ritual killings. It warned the public against trivialising such criminals as mere “Yahoo boys and girls.”

The Commission condemned the attack and pledged to uphold the law against such acts. “We will not tolerate any further attacks on our officers,” the statement read, adding that the agency remains resolute in its fight against corruption and cybercrime.

The EFCC expressed gratitude for the support and condolences received from other agencies and well-meaning Nigerians as it mourns the loss of a dedicated officer who died in service to the nation.
